The education environment you work within is more demanding than ever. The Ontario school system and its governing legal framework continues to evolve as new challenges arise. As an educator, administrator, Supervisory Officer, Board official, Trustee or lawyer, you need a clear understanding of the laws that govern the education system. Failure to understand or keep current have serious and potentially costly ramifications.

Completion of this program counts towards
The Osgoode Certificate in Education Law

Using case studies and real life examples, this OsgoodePDprogram has been developed by education law experts to provide you with an understanding of the most pertinent legal issues that confront educational leaders and their legal advisors. You will acquire knowledge and strategies which you can apply immediately. The program written materials will act as a valuable resource long after the course is over.

Topics will include:

  • How the Charter and the Human Rights Code impact your day-to-day decisions, including disability discrimination, religious accommodation and freedom of expression
  • Understanding mental health law issues in schools
  • Family law issues including rights of child/parent, custody & access, child protection, foster care, homelessness
  • Student discipline best practices on the front-lines
  • Privacy rights and search and seizure issues in schools
  • Police protocols & the Youth Criminal Justice Act
  • Your role and responsibilities in relation to the dangers and impact of cyberspace

PLUS! You will gain valuable insights by participating in break-out sessions with your colleagues and education law experts on day 2.
