This unique and practical program will provide you with the most up-to-date knowledge and strategies you and your institution need to respond– with confidence – to the increasingly complex issue of campus sexual violence.

As a professional working in this area, you must be able to anticipate, provide guidance and adeptly respond to the broad range of challenging issues that can arise in the complex arena that is campus sexual violence.

This program is not an academic review of the legal issues. You will get information, tools, and practical strategies that you can put to immediate use. Over the course of four intensive days, you will acquire key knowledge and best practices from some of the most knowledgeable and experienced experts in Canada.

Using in-depth case studies and working in small groups, you will have the opportunity to reinforce and apply your knowledge – in a zero consequence environment. This interactive learning format will allow you practice learned concepts with expert feedback. You will also be able to share your experience with and learn from peers from across the country.

You will:

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of key procedural issues: the complaint; interim measures; the investigation; adjudication; alternative resolutions
  • Obtain strategies and best practices for ensuring procedural fairness throughout the process
  • Learn critical terms and concepts including: What is sexual violence? What is “consent”? What is a complaint? Who has standing to file a complaint?
  • Get an in-depth overview of the legal framework – the key legislation and laws that govern campus sexual violence, including Bill 132, the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Human Rights codes
  • Obtain expert guidance on the toxic combination of drugs, alcohol and sexual violence
  • Evaluate investigation reports and learn what you should be looking and asking for
  • Understand how criminal and campus complaints processes intersect
  • Acquire tools for navigating privacy and confidentiality challenges
  • Learn how to effectively communicate with the media and the community, including how to manage the message
  • Understand the range of penalty options, including enforcement
