Drafting a will that can stand up to challenges is the cornerstone of a successful estates practice. This intensive, learn-by-doing one day program provides a unique opportunity to hone your drafting skills while receiving individualized feedback.

This program is part of The Osgoode Intensive Program in Wills & Estates. For a full listing of required programs, click here.

Drafting a tightly worded will can protect you from potential challenges, and is a skill that requires thoughtful consideration and practice. When a client comes into your office requesting a will, it is critical that you are prepared to competently draft based on varying, and sometimes, complex scenarios.

OsgoodePD’s Intensive Will Drafting Workshop will provide you with the tools and confidence you need to succeed.

The day long program includes sample fact scenarios, lectures and small group breakout sessions. Personalized feedback will provide you with ample opportunity to develop and refine your drafting skills.

You must be prepared to complete a pre-program introductory webinar and drafting assignment which will be reviewed by an experienced faculty member and discussed in small groups at the program. You will be asked to refer to your own templates and precedents in order to complete the assignment.

You will learn:

  • How to avoid common drafting errors
  • The basic administrative and preamble clauses that should be included in a will, and how to revise them given different fact situations
  • The components of a Simple Will, and the situations in which it is appropriate to use
    • You will practice modifying standard clauses to effectively reflect client needs articulated in various fact scenarios
  • How to incorporate clauses to a situation where a family cottage or a second marriage may be involved
  • When to use multiple wills, and how to effectively draft them
