Over three evening sessions, you will have the opportunity to explore complex estate planning issues while updating and reinforcing your core knowledge and skills.

Refresh your knowledge on basic concepts and take part in in-depth discussions of complex issues in Wills and Estates. Complete the program on its own, or as part of The Osgoode Program in Wills and Estates. As the first offering in the Osgoode Program in Wills and Estates, this program will provide you with foundational knowledge and set you up for success in subsequent programs in the Osgoode Program in Wills and Estates.

    • The lawyer’s responsibility regarding substantiating capacity
    • Dealing with undue influence leading to will changes
  • Key issues in taxation during estate planning
    • Taxation of testamentary trusts
    • Charitable bequests and estate donations
  • Overview of will drafting, executing and reporting
    • Using multiple wills
    • Tips of advising on and drafting multi-jurisdictional wills
    • Preferential treatment to one beneficiary
    • Avoiding common errors when dealing with complex situations
    • Getting a will signed in difficult situations
    • Techniques to avoid negligence claims
  • Fundamentals of estate administration
    • How to determine which assets form part of the estate
    • Disclosure issues – what are beneficiaries entitled to know?
    • Securing and administering the assets with and without a certificate
    • Potential liability issues facing the estate trustees
    • Best practices for protecting yourself and your client

Group Discounts

Program Changes

We will make every effort to present the Intensive Program as advertised, but it may be necessary to change the dates, location, speakers or content with little or no notice. In the event of program cancellation, York University and Osgoode Hall Law School’s liability is limited to reimbursement of paid fees.

Cancellations and Substitutions

Substitution of registrants is permitted at any time. If you are unable to find a substitute, a full refund is available if a cancellation request is received in writing 14 days prior to the program date. If a cancellation request is made with less than 14 days notice, a $75 administration fee will apply. No other refund is available.
