    What? Your client refuses to pay your account in full because you don’t know the formula for calculating business days in an Excel spread sheet? What does that have to do with the practise of law? D. Casey Flaherty happens to think it has a lot to do with providing valuable legal services, and what he thinks is making waves.
    

    Casey is Corporate Counsel at Kia Motors America, Inc. where he oversees dealer-related legal matters and electronic discovery. Before moving in-house, Casey practised at a large US law firm. Once he was on the other side of the bills, he developed a technology competency audit to test his outside counsel. If they don’t pass the audit, they don’t receive their full fees. The rationale? If they can’t pass, they’re not using their time – time billed to him – efficiently. The audit is currently being automated so it can be offered free to other in-house counsel, and many are planning to use it.
