Teachers, administrators and school boards grapple with increasingly complex family law issues. This after school webinar will provide you with a current and concise update about the most common family law issues as they play out in the education environment.

This unique OsgoodePD education webinar has been developed by education law experts to provide education professionals and their advisors with a clear understanding of the pressing family law issues facing educators today.  What are your legal obligations?  How should you handle the issues on the front-line?

This session will drill down on the tools and strategies you need in order to effectively deal with the complex family law issues educators’ face, including:

  • Interpreting court orders: understanding the role of the school/position of the board
  • Joint custody presumptions under the Education Act & dealing with front-line disputes
  • Access: from the right to education information under the Children’s Law Reform Act to inappropriate interactions with the school
  • Dealing with a court summons: What’s the process? What documents can be provided? Do you speak with counsel?
  • When does the Office of the Children’s Lawyer get involved: what are your obligations? Do you allow interviews at school? What about requests for access to information?  Is consent required?
  • Best practices in responding to requests for Ontario School Record information
  • Dealing with parental harassment
  • Update on recent Human Rights decisions: how are boards being required to adapt their policies to accommodate joint custody arrangements?

“The opportunity to engage with current education law and related issues was truly valuable. The focus on current issues such as cyberbullying made this relevant and important.”
