Today’s education system is more challenging than ever and a greater number of students have special needs requiring support beyond those ordinarily received in the school setting.  In order to ensure the learning rights and safety of all students and staff is not compromised, it is essential that those working in special education have a complete and current understanding of the law and how to apply it.

This 12th Annual OsgoodePD program was developed to provide you with a practical, up-to-date understanding of the most pertinent legal challenges in special education law today and give you strategies to deal with them.

Topics to be covered include:

  • The latest human rights case law relating to special education and schools
  • The positive duty to address allegations of discrimination in the school
  • Strategies for dealing with violent behavior in schools: protecting students and staff
  • How does OHSA impact special needs students, their teachers and other educational workers?
  • Can a school board refuse to admit a student under the Education Act? Why and how?
